Day 12: Rouyn Noranda, QC to Montreal, QC

Day 12

Miles 453 (4188)
Two Lanes 385 (3601)
Top down 453 (3764)

Driving from Rouyn-Noranda we continued through landscape studded with surface gold mining. In Malartic, we stopped and went through the small geology museum. A young somewhat bilingual guide took us through since most of the displays were in French only. When we had finished, we asked him why the several city blocks across from the museum were being razed. His answer as one from the Gold Rush days of California: "They found gold that part of the town so they are tearing it all doen so they can get to the gold."

Then we drove for miles and miles across the Canadian shield, dotted with small hills and small lakes. 120 miles of it went thru a "preserve faunique" but we said not a hair of an animal. But Linda ran the Porsche at 75-80 mph thru a 55 mph zone ("Everyone else is driving that fast!")

Then we passed Mont Tremblant, the famous Quebec ski area, and dropped down into Montreal, elevation 76 feet. Linda navigating with Magellan, and Steve driving, we found our way into the old city to Auberge de les Passants Sans Soucy. We found it on Tripadvisor and it is heaven. At 171 Rue St. Paul, it is about 100 yards from where Montreal was founded in 1642, and is on one of the original streets. Genie (pronounced with a soft 'J' like Jennnnie) showed us to Room 204.

Vieux Montreal (the old city) is about 10 blocks wide and 3 blocks deep. We are in the center and share the same block with le Catedral de Notre Dame. We walked several blocked and then settled into a French/Belgian restaurant specialing in mussels.

Then to bed to prepare for our first day of NO DRIVING on the trip!
