Day 35: Hannibal, Mo to Emporia, KS

Day 35

Miles 357 (9595)
Two Lanes 179 (6655) 69%
Top Down 185 (7745) 81%

We arose and walked the mile into downtown Hannibal and walked by Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) boyhood home where he lived from age 7 – 18. They have rebuilt the famous picket fence that Tom Sawyer conned his friends into whitewashing for him, then paying him for the privilege to do so!

Then off to Kansas City. We ambled down two lanes roads, and then reached a portable sign that said US 24 was closed at the Missouri River 5 miles ahead. Flood stage. So we retraced our steps and crossed the river in Glasgow, MO. We were trying to get to a museum that allowed the last entrance at 3:30. It was at 400 Grand Avenue. We entered that into the GPS and it took us to 2200 Grand. After a few acussations of “who put the wrong address in” so we did it again and again it wanted to take us to 2200. It has never done that before. We got their and missed the entrance. Then we found out it was a mandatory 90 minutes guided tour. The GPS knew what it was doing, and prevented us from going to something we would have felt trapped in! Very strange.

We instead walked down to the riverfront. There were starting to barricade he streets for a concert. Turns out you could have still bought a $35 ticket for Sublime.

We are in KC and it is dinner. Checking Zagat we find Fiorella’s Jack Stack BBQ. Best BBQ in KC according to Zagat. I checked it out on the net and found out that, actually, Zagat ranked it as the best BBQ in the world. So we had to go. There are four in KC so we went to the one closest to our route (we were heading SW 80 miles after dinner to Emporia for the night).

OMG. WOW. We had the mixed platter for two. Perfectly slow cooked. Great basting. Selection of dipping sauces. Pork ribs, beef ribs, burnt ends, brisket, sliced beef. And the coleslaw was great. The baked beans had fine bits of brisket and burnt ends in it, Another OMG. Linda declared them the best.

Google Fiorella’s Jack Stack. They ship cooked frozen vacuum packed food and meals nationwide.

Almost didn’t brush my teeth at night.

The Missouri River in Kansas City. The opposite bank is undeveloped and is likely as Lewis & Clark saw it.

#1 BBQ in the world according to Zagat. We agree. It was awesome, Bringing a bottle of sauce home.
