Day 34: Pikeville, KY to Hannibal, MO

Day 34

Miles 604 (9238)
Two Lanes 224 (6476) 70%
Top Down 309 (7560) 82%

We said our good-byes to Brigitte and Steve and headed west. First stop: The Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, KY. Making bourbon since 1812, this distillery survived Prohibition by having one of the ten licenses to make medicinal bourbon! The doctor could write you a prescription for whiskey for a medical condition and you could take it to the druggist to have it filled. Sound like medical marijuana?

Woodford is the only US distillery that triple distills, just as the Scottish do. It won the prestigious double gold and was named best bourbon in the world at this spring’s San Francisco Spirits Competition. At the end of the tour, we tasted. Yumm!

Leaving Versailles we drove through Kentucky horse country: beautiful ranches with very expensive houses and elaborate stables. Many proudly proclaimed their horses’ names and their victories.

We then drove through southern Indiana and Illinois and crossed the Mississippi in St. Louis. As the photos below show, it was at flood stage.

We arrived at Randy and Lanette’s in Hannibal, MO in the early evening, and although we had not seen each other in ten years, it was immediately like old times. Again, we are reminded that miles and time does not dull the real friendships in your life.

After dinner their close circle of friends came over and the twelve of us drank wine on the large front porch of their 1881 Victorian until after midnight. Great food. Great wine. Great people.

Remember the nascent Mississippi from near its source (Lake Itasca) in Minnesota (Day 9) ?

Well it grew......

Flood stage on the Mississippi in old St. Louis. Note the street is not blocked off. (Maybe there are a lot of amphibious vehicles in the area!) :(
